It's a NET MD recorder, not a full one. Sound in incredible, very easy to use and transferring music from your computer to this device is simple. This walkman is just.great. It does perfectly what is was meant to be, no more, no less. Some folks would be desepointed because you can not record from an externel souce like with a microphone input or line input or transferring music from it to a computer. This device was not meant to be. For those who are searching for that king of product with that kind of specs, that's a very very good choice, especially for the price. (actually, I bought 2).
Mini-Disc seems to just fly by and doesn't get a lot of attention these days. There's no editing on the Net-MD and you can only do that from the PC side. It's freakin long. The best part was the battery life. Also I was able to drag and drop, no problemo there. Took me about 5 days to received my Sony MZ-NE410 Net MD.
Seems like everyone hates the Sonicstage application that came with it (because of the check-in and check-out thingy). I Didn't want to take a chance so I downloaded the newest version and didn't see any of that crap that they were talking about. Almost everybody I know either has an Ipod or MP3 player. I'm planning on getting another one; Sony MZNH600D Hi-MD MiniDisc Walkman, which can hold more songs and is powered thru the USB when connected to the PC. I suppose if your system can encode faster than you won't have to wait so long. The bad part of this Net-MD is that you cannot tranfer back any song, but you can delete it through the Sonicstage application. Too bad this style doesn't have a backlight or a mic, which is why I'm giving it just a four star. If you're looking to record look for one that has a mic/mic line.
The battery was still full after all that. But you know what, thanks to Sony, I was able to find a portable music player that I can live with. Just remember to bring a couple Discs. I'd transfered about 39 songs @ LP2 and only took me about 15 minutes or less. Maybe cause I was using a 2.8 Ghz system running on Vista. You may run out of songs before your battery do. If you just need to listen than this one is great for you.
The only real gripe I have with this is it's hard to see the battery life indicator most times. Also not, this unit is only a NetMD loader and player, uses only USB, and cannot record via TOSLink, Line In, or MIC. 1GB Sansa flash players can be had as cheap as $12 if you buy at the right place at the right time.
Take note, there are no 64 bit drivers for this device. If you are using a 64 bit OS, consider using VMWare Workstation to use it.
I purchased this unit in September of 2009.The first thing you need to do is download the latest software from Sony's support site and SimpleBurner 2, which is easy enough to find on a Google search. When loading music onto it either via SonicStage of SimpleBurner, the battery will drain much quicker. If your idea is to use this strictly as an MP3 player, I would look elsewhere.
It will not work using Windows 7's XP mode.I mainly use this for listening to recordings made with a JE440 Sony Hi Fi MD deck, and I mainly use that to record Vinyl LP's. It sounds fantastic, the battery life for playing discs is incredible, and conveniently takes only one AA battery.
MiniDiscs, however, offer a versatility flash players cannot, and the sound achieved with this unit is much better than any MP3 portable I've heard, even the Zune, which sounds far better than any iPod, IMHO.The display screen offers only the most bare details and is a nightmare to read, no matter what light you're in. The USB is the only input on this device.
Very satisfied with this order. It may not be the latest in MP3s but it does more than what I needed in an inexpensive way.
Great transformation from CD's. Wish there was a connection from this MD player to your head unit in the car, since they don't make MD Receivers for cars.
